Art Classes
The art program is designed as a complement to the primary curricular mission of the Woolman Semester. It is based on the assumption that artistic perception and expression are distinctly different from the forms of consciousness that are assumed in the usual core of academic curricula, which rely heavily upon verbal, logical and synthetic forms of consciousness. Students can choose between drawing and ceramics for their art credit.
Learning to draw involves learning to see in ways that are more accurate and complete. When one’s seeing becomes more developed, one’s drawings are automatically more accurate and expressive. This program involves a variety of exercises to enhance and intensify the student’s perception of the visual world. Students develop a portfolio of drawings representing a variety of subject matter and drawing techniques.
The ceramics program is designed to introduce students to the basics of high-fired stoneware pottery. Students are provided instruction in a variety of techniques, including the use of potter's wheel, hand building through slab work and coil work, sculpture construction, and glazing.
